Description of the hike
The peaceful village of Montcortès sits on a quiet plateau in the Pyrenees, where traditional stone houses and sweeping mountain views create a timeless atmosphere. Nearby lies its greatest treasure, Lake Montcortès, located at 1,065 meters above sea level and one of the few karst-origin lakes in Catalonia. Fed by underground waters, the lake maintains a stable level and supports a rich ecosystem surrounded by lush vegetation.
This natural haven is a paradise for birdlife. Aquatic and migratory species such as the cabusset, the fotja, and the balquer can be spotted on its waters, while the skies above are often crossed by majestic birds like the red kite, the booted eagle, and even the bearded vulture.
Easily accessible from Pobleta de Bellveí or via Gerri de la Sal through charming villages like Peramea and Bretui, the area combines natural beauty with cultural depth. Adding a touch of magic is the legend of the “Sleeping Giantess," a mountain silhouette visible from multiple viewpoints that truly seems to reveal a woman resting across the landscape.
Montcortès is more than a destination—it’s a place where nature, wildlife, and legend come together in one unforgettable setting.
