MORPHOLOGY

If we're talking about the Catalan donkey, the morphology of this breed is truly special. This animal has a robust build, ideal for the harsh mountains and fields of Catalonia. Its head is large with long ears, which not only give it an endearing appearance but also allow it to detect sounds from a great distance, a crucial ability for its survival.

The body of the Catalan donkey is compact and muscular, which gives it great resistance.
Its firm and robust legs are designed to traverse rough terrain without losing stability.
Furthermore, its fur can vary between dark tones, but something that stands out is its distinctive white snout and belly, which give it a unique touch, creating an unmistakable appearance.

PERSONALITY

They are friendly animals that love to be petted, and we assure you, you won't be able to refuse to give it to them.
They'll come up to greet you as soon as you set foot in the meadow. They have a brown, furry coat during winter, and when the weather starts to improve,
Its fur becomes shorter and darker.

WHY ARE THEY ENDANGERED?

Historically, donkeys played a vital role in rural work, especially in mountain agriculture, due to their ability to work on difficult terrain and their low food requirements. However, with the mechanization of agriculture and the introduction of heavy machinery, the Catalan donkey gradually lost its practical use.

Currently, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, there are approximately 919 Catalan donkeys left in all of Spain, 873 of which are in Catalonia. This figure places the Catalan donkey in a critical situation, as a population of fewer than 1,000 is considered endangered. The Association for the Promotion of the Catalan Donkey Breed (AFRAC) maintains a registry of 350 animals, but it is estimated that the actual number could be even lower, since many owners do not report the deaths of their animals.
